Dental Implants are titanium tooth root replacements surgically placed into the jawbone. At Sunrise Dental of Federal Way, we use dental implants to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or a whole arch of missing teeth. Implants can be used to secure dentures into place as well.

The first step of the dental implant process is surgically implanting the artificial tooth root into the jaw at the site of the missing tooth. The bone will grow around the metal post and fuse with it within a few months. Once the implant is fused with the bone, an abutment is placed on top of the dental implant post to connect the implant to the crown. A crown is then placed onto the abutment to replace the missing natural tooth

Types of Dental Implants

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of dental implant. They are surgically placed directly into the jawbone. These implants resemble small screws, cylinders, or plates and provide a strong foundation for artificial teeth (dental crowns or other restorations). Endosteal implants are suitable for most patients with sufficient bone density and volume to support the implant.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are an alternative to endosteal implants for patients with insufficient bone height or density in their jawbone. Instead of being placed into the bone, subperiosteal implants are positioned on or above the jawbone beneath the gum tissue. They consist of a metal framework that supports the artificial teeth. Subperiosteal implants are typically used when bone grafting is not an option or desired.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

Improved Aesthetics

Dental implants closely resemble natural teeth in appearance and function. They are designed to blend seamlessly with your existing teeth, providing a natural-looking smile. With dental implants, you can regain confidence in your appearance and enjoy an improved overall aesthetic result.

Enhanced Functionality

Dental implants function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and chew comfortably and effectively. Unlike removable dentures, which can slide or cause discomfort, implants provide a stable and secure foundation for biting and chewing various types of food.

Jawbone Preservation

When a tooth is lost, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate over time due to a lack of stimulation. Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots and stimulate the jawbone, helping to prevent bone loss and maintaining the natural shape and density of the jawbone.

Preservation of Adjacent Teeth

Unlike traditional dental bridges, which require the alteration of adjacent healthy teeth for support, dental implants do not rely on neighboring teeth. This means the adjacent teeth can remain intact, preserving their natural structure and strength.

Enhanced Comfort

Dental implants eliminate the discomfort and irritation often associated with removable dentures. They are securely anchored in the jawbone, so there is no risk of them slipping or causing discomfort as is often the case with traditional dentures.
